Subject: Cafeteria Budgeting, Benny’s Cafe Hours of Operation

The Problem

I wanted to inform you about the quality food that is needed when one would want to accomplish the work one had in mind. However, this is not the case at CCNY. The cafeteria food is of low quality and overpriced. For example, Benny’s Cafe isn’t half bad, their sandwiches are small, which is the size of a child’s palm, and are priced $8-9 with tax. A deli outside the campus would be selling the same sandwich for half the price. When this is the situation, it leads to students being unsatisfied with the quality of the food and they become irritated. Irritation is not the best state of mind when a student needs to be prepared for their next class.

Cafeteria Budgeting, Benny’s Cafe Hours of Operation

In the latest financial statements, we see the total worth of City College, which is stated at $79,154,502. Nonetheless, this college is spending less than five percent on cash flows for food service. The mind-blowing part about this is that CCNY is spending a little more than three and a half million dollars on food services and they are still running out of resources for the people who are here for dinner. From what I have experienced, Benny’s Pantry runs out of food more than 2 hours prior to closing.

  • CCNY Budget: $79,154,502
  • CCNY food services: $3,532,793
  • Benny’s Cafe: 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Solution

In short, by refocusing a little of the budget on resources that are used for food services, maybe CCNY could have a satisfied student body that is fully engaged in the afternoon classes. For example, CCNY is using 4.4% of the budget for food services such as vending machines, Benny’s Pantry, and Benny’s Cafe. If the school was taking better care of their students, maybe City College would have an engaged student body. This leads to students being eager to contribute to the CCNY community: better support; a sense of belonging; developing relationships; and acquiring new sets of skills to function.
